Anxiety, simply put, is pervasive and debilitating. There is often no one thing that creates a person’s anxiety, which is why it can be so difficult to treat. It is most often a number of accumulated experiences that put a collective stress on the system, leaving the nervous system highly stimulated to the point where a seemingly benign interaction or event can spur an anxious episode, or even a panic attack. Sometimes contributing factors are more clear, such as a major loss, illness or a big life change. Other times, the sources are less clear.
With the Chinese medicine paradigm, your emotional experience is not limited to the experience of your mind, it often arises in physical symptoms, as well. Many people report various aches and pains, increased heart rate, dizziness, chest oppression, shortness of breath, digestive problems or body tension - any of these symptoms can be tied to your experience of anxiety or stress. Together, we learn to listen to the language of the body as it gives us cues to identify anxiety and then to treat the persistent imbalances that keep you from feeling capable of either overcoming or managing your experience of anxiety.
